Serendipity and Refugees

Posted Aug 14th 2004, 07:32 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

The dictionary defines serendipity as "the faculty of making happy discoveries by accident" and I certainly had one of those serendipity moments this week. During my frequent meetings with Pastor Justin Amadi, our refugee pastor at Kampala Foursquare Church, I notice he had someone's resume on his desk. That caught my attention, and in following up his project I learned that one of our Kampala Foursquare Church members, a university graduate, and very nice young lady, has now...

On The Scene Of A Genocide

Posted Aug 8th 2004, 12:56 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
Last April I was in Kigali, Rwanda during the 10th anniversary of the Rwanda Genocide. It was an especially moving time as the world press and world leaders converged in both New York and Kigali to mourn the loss of nearly one million souls; there were also statements of remorse from political leaders who had done nothing to prevent the crisis. For me, the pledges...

Kampala Foursquare Church
This past Sunday was another victory for our ministry in Uganda. Our LIFE Ministry Institute honored twenty-one graduates from the Foundations for Christian Service course. Kampala Foursquare Church was jammed to capacity with family and friends of the graduands. We were pleased to have Pastor Dennis Odoi, the local church coordinator for World Vision Uganda, as our guest of honor. This...

You Are Not A Machine!

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
"Pastor! You are not a machine!" It was the voice of my secretary and office manager Margaret Onyait talking to me, "You simply cannot work day and night. You have to rest." True, but then everyone on staff at the Foursquare office works fifty to sixty hours during CAPS week. What is CAPS? Read on ...

Dancing With Lambs

Posted Jun 19th 2004, 04:00 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
Tonight--Saturday night--I am just back to the "old mission house" from a potluck dinner with our Kampala Foursquare Church home cell leaders and their teams. More than 200 people showed up for the dinner. We had a great time! Kampala Foursquare Church is home to more than a dozen languages and cultures, so we had a small taste of what I believe heaven...

Coming To America

Posted May 23rd 2004, 02:28 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

For the next two weeks the old mission house is moving to America!
Margaret and I will be in San Francisco attending the Foursquare Convention June 1st through 4th. We hope to see many of you at that convention meeting. Please be sure to seek us out and just say, "Hello!"
Please let me share briefly a testimony I heard just yesterday in our office that brought tears to my eyes. A Congolese refugee, a member of Kampala Foursquare...

Where Thieves Break In and Steal

Posted May 21st 2004, 10:04 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
I felt the tug at my sleeve just as I was about to step out onto the platform to preach a crusade message. It was going to be a good message, too. I had felt it all afternoon; there was a Gospel message burning in my heart once again. I had spent the day in prayer and study of the Word of God. ...

Smart Bombs and Sacrificial Lambs

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
On my bookshelf sits a valuable guide book for tracking African game animals in the bush. It is titled, The Behavior Guide to African Mammals, and I use it quite often when I go on safari in the bush tracking these magnificent animals. The book describes nearly every feature of the lives and habits of animals, including how they live with one another in their...

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
This week I have been back on the west coast of Africa . I had forgotten exactly HOW hot and humid the west coast could be! Kinshasa is a city of nearly ten million people and the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. I am here with Rev. Leopold Banzubaze, the National Overseer of Foursquare Burundi and President of the Alliance...

Challenging the Assumptions of Functionalist Sociology

Posted Apr 30th 2004, 10:29 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
This past week has been sociology week. Each year in April-May I teach a 35 hour Introduction to Sociology in the degree program at Glad Tidings Bible College. For the students, primarily pastors, it is a week of stretching to comprehend the concepts of sociology. For me, it is a week of challenging the assumptions and notions of the pastors with ideas about...

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
"So, what kind of structure do you think it will be?"
For the past six years we have been ministering in Uganda and explaining to people that we are simply putting in the foundations for something God is going to do through the Foursquare Gospel church. Laying the foundations for a new structure isn't glamorous work. It doesn't win many awards. It...

Five Things That Never Say, "Enough".

Posted Dec 15th 2003, 01:40 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
I was first alerted when I came back home from Rwanda. I walked into our new offices to find my usually bright and cheery secretary, Margaret Onyait, dialing the telephone with a very grim look on her face. It was very bad news. Another dear sister from Kampala Foursquare Church was dead; a victim of HIV. Proverbs 30:15-16 lists the grave as one...

Standing In Line For An HIV Blood Test.

Posted Nov 29th 2003, 03:54 by Foursquare Missions East Africa on Evangelism/Missions

Well, its been yet another busy week around the old mission house once again.
This week I went to have an HIV blood test done on myself. Just saying those words out loud is frightening enough. Last week, when I announced to the world I was going to do this, I had first talked it over with my wife. We were (and, are) in agreement that this was a good way to model being responsible in this society. ...
