(Egypt)—Zakaria Botros is a Coptic priest in Egypt who, though unknown in the West, has been described as a "phenomenon" in the Middle East by reporter Raymond Ibrahim. Why? He is responsible for evangelizing many of the six million Muslim converts to Christianity every year.

According to the National Review report, Botros appears frequently on the uncensored Arabic channel al-Hayat (Life TV), a form of new media that is gaining wild popularity in the Middle East. A "fiery" man who minces no words, Ibrahim says Botros has counted Islam's ten demands on non-Muslims with ten demands of his own. There are times when someone will call Botros' show to argue with him and end up giving their life to Christ over the telephone, live on air.

Also, notes the report, "Botros's mastery of classical Arabic not only allows him to reach a broader audience, it enables him to delve deeply into the voluminous Arabic literature—much of it untapped by Western writers who rely on translations."

Ibrahim notes that another reason for Botros's success is that "his polemical technique has proven irrefutable. Each of his episodes has a theme...often expressed as a question. To answer the question, Botros meticulously quotes—always careful to give sources and reference numbers—from authoritative Islamic texts on the subject, starting from the Koran; then from the canonical sayings of the prophet—the Hadith; and finally from the words of prominent Muslim theologians past and present, the illustrious ulema."

Then, says Ibrahim, Botros "humbly invites the ulema, the revered articulators of sharia law, to respond and show the error in his methodology. He does demand, however, that their response be based on "al-dalil we al-burhan,"—"evidence and proof," one of his frequent refrains—not shout-downs or sophistry."

"More often than not," says Ibrahim, "the response from the ulema is deafening silence."

Concludes Ibrahim, "The ultimate reason for Botros's success is that, unlike his Western counterparts who criticize Islam from a political standpoint, his primary interest is the salvation of souls. He often begins and concludes his programs by stating that he loves all Muslims as fellow humans and wants to steer them away from falsehood to Truth. To that end, he doesn't just expose troubling aspects of Islam. Before concluding every program, he quotes pertinent Biblical verses and invites all his viewers to come to Christ. Botros's motive is not to incite the West against Islam, promote 'Israeli interests,' or 'demonize' Muslims, but to draw Muslims away from the dead legalism of sharia to the spirituality of Christianity. Many Western critics fail to appreciate that, to disempower radical Islam, something theocentric and spiritually satisfying—not secularism, democracy, capitalism, materialism, feminism, etc.—must be offered in its place. The truths of one religion can only be challenged and supplanted by the truths of another. And so Father Zakaria Botros has been fighting fire with fire."

(Texas, USA)—There are few words six year old William Cooper, Jr. likes more than the two he uttered seven times at the State of Texas Elementary Chess Championship: check mate. "I was surprised," said Cooper, a resident of Texas. "It was very scary for several of my games." Scary, for the first grader who is studying pre-algebra math, meant he made several moves during his games that he immediately realized were mistakes. But he was able to overcome them to take first place at the tournament, a repeat of his finish at the 2007 tournament were he tied for first place.

"My dad was praying for me every time I was playing one of the games, which could last one to two hours each, over a two day tournament weekend. If I was in a difficult situation, I would stop to think, knowing because of the prayer, God would give me wisdom", stated Cooper. William has learned many life lessons from playing chess over the past year. "Chess has taught me about prayer, practice, patience and making friends. Making friends from different parts of the state and country has been a lot of fun."

The victory qualified Cooper for the national chess tournament later this year. It also earned him a trophy that now stands in his room, a mere three inches shorter than he is. "I couldn't carry it, so my dad had to," Cooper said. William Cooper, Sr. can take credit for introducing the game to his son when the boy was at an age where some children are still fumbling with building blocks. "When he was four I showed him how to play chess, but I pulled my hair out because I didn't think he was getting it," the elder Cooper said. "But when he was five, his mom bought him chess for the computer, and he was really interested in it."

The tournament featured about 1,500 competitors, including 166 in William's K-1 category. William has played in more than 20 tournaments this school year, including state and national championships. He spends around ten hours per week learning the game. Between computerized opponents, practice with his chess tutors or competing he keeps learning the game and life lessons.

Late-Abortions Plummet Nearly 30 Percent in what has been called the Nation's Abortion Capital

(Topeka, Kansas)—The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is reporting that the total number of abortions done in Kansas dipped in 2007, with the most remarkable decrease in late-term abortions. Those generally decreased by 23 percent while late abortions done after viability dropped 28 percent.

"We fully expected to see a dramatic drop in late-term abortions in Kansas due to the fact that late-term abortionist George Tiller closed his abortion mill to patients for a record 38 days last summer," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "We believe that closure was a result of a number of factors, including pressure from pro-life groups and criminal charges that were unexpectedly filed against him by the attorney general's office."

"We strongly believe in the power of prayer, and last year Operation Rescue hosted three major prayer events outside Tiller's abortion mill prior to the closure," said Newman. "We also aggressively brought pressure on Tiller's abortion business through our tireless investigations, which have exposed what we believe is criminal activity committed by his abortion staff. We publicly released our information and reported it to law enforcement, the legislature, and other disciplinary groups."

However, the statistics also show an unfortunate increase in the number of abortions done on women who reside in other states. Operation Rescue attributes this increase to the recent closure of several abortion clinics in nearby states.

"This is a 'good news, bad news' situation," said Newman. "While we are grateful that dangerous abortion mills are closing around the nation, it is unfortunate that Kansas has become a magnet for child-killing. This only adds to Kansas's reputation of being the Nation's Abortion Capital."

Church Set Up Webcam during Service So Parishioner's Husband in Iraq could Worship and Pray with them on Easter

We were led to try something new and it worked out so well that Tom and perhaps others he's stationed with will be with us for services every Sunday from now on."

(Antioch, Illinois)—Tom Kirk, a former police officer, is currently serving in Iraq. In the nine months that he has been gone, his family has only seen him twice. So, when a webcam was set up on Easter Sunday in the church they attend, Community Church of the Holy Spirit, Tom was able to be a visual and vocal part of that service with his family, worshiping and praying with them. It was a huge blessing, not just to Kirk's family, but to his fellow parishioners as well.

"I talk to him all the time but seeing him today made it real," said his wife, Tanya. "It meant everything to me. He looked so handsome and happy, and I just needed to see his face."

According to the church's website, a laptop was placed near the front in the center aisle, and set up so that the Web cam could be turned 360° so Kirk wouldn't miss any part of the Easter celebration, and his family could see him at various times.

"It was the best Easter ever seeing Daddy on the computer," said his 8-year-old daughter, Torriea. Her brother Trey, age 6, told his mom that the best part was getting to wave to his dad, blow him a kiss and hear him singing.
